2020 was a fairly forgettable season for the 49ers, but there were still three catches along the way that were memorable enough to be Stitched San Francisco 49ers Jerseys included in the NFL’s collection of the top 100 catches of the year.

The collection was released to the NFL’s YouTube account on February 19 and included catches from wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, tight end Jordan Reed, and tight end George Kittle, with Reed and Kittle’s catches cracking the top 20. Here’s a look at the 49ers catches that made their list.

C.J. Beathard and Kendrick Bourne’s meaningless-but-still-cool Hail Mary completion (ranked 68th overall)

This play came as time expired in the 49ers’ 41-33 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on December 20. Chances are it would have ranked higher had it made a greater impact on the outcome of the game, but it’s still fun to look at nonetheless. Down 41-27 with seven seconds remaining in the game, C.J. Beathard fired a pass over 60 yards in the air to the end zone, which was grabbed by a leaping Kendrick Bourne amid half a dozen Cowboys defenders for the touchdown.

Well that’s certainly one way to end it…

Jordan Reed’s one-hander against the New Orleans Saints (ranked 20th overall)

Reed had a handful of highlights for the 49ers in 2020, with this one topping the list. He made this one-handed catch early in the second quarter in the 49ers’ 27-13 loss in New Orleans on November 15, palming the tip of the ball to narrowly save a third-down Nick Mullens pass from hitting the turf. The pass wasn’t enough to get the 49ers a first down, but it was clearly one heck of an effort from Reed.

George Kittle’s incredible one-hander against the Seattle Seahawks (ranked 4th overall)

As nice as Reed’s catch was, there’s no doubt this one tops it. Kittle made this catch in the third quarter of the 49ers’ 26-23 loss to the Seahawks in the season finale. Kittle spun around to make a one-handed grab of a pass from Beathard, then held on as he tumbled to the turf. The catch set up a field goal to give the 49ers a 9-6 lead and instantly went down as one of the highlight plays of Kittle’s career.

Which catches were good enough in the NFL’s mind to top that one? The number three catch was a falling-to-the-ground touchdown grab by Cowboys receiver Cee Dee Lamb against the Vikings, followed at number two by a one-handed touchdown grab by Titans receiver A.J. Brown on a flea-flicker against the Jaguars. Number one should come as no surprise — the famous Hail Murray pass, which saw Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray connect with DeAndre Hopkins for a game-winning Hail Mary against the Bills.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel isn’t worried about the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, even after the acquisition of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

“I ain’t lost to them in two years,” he told Deion Sanders and Jamie Dukes on the 21st & Prime podcast (h/t David Bonilla of “I ain’t lost to the Rams in two years, so it is what it is. They try to do what we do, but they can’t do it Wholesale San Francisco 49ers Jerseys like we do it, you feel what I’m saying?”

He wasn’t exactly complimentary of the Rams offense, either.

“The Rams want to play-action all game,” he added. “They ain’t dropping back and letting the ball go. They can’t do it. They want to play-action, get their little down flats, the little flat routes all game, just let their people run. You ain’t gonna win like that.”

Samuel’s beef with the Rams is nothing new. During the 2020 season, Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald claimed he didn’t know who Samuel was when asked a question about him after the Niners beat the Rams 24-16 in October.

Samuel had something to say following both that game and the Niners’ 23-20 win in November:

He earned the right to chirp. In the two wins, he combined to catch 17 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown.

Those were easily the highlights of Samuel’s injury-shortened 2020 campaign that saw him play just seven contests. That was the theme of San Francisco’s season, as the team was decimated by injuries on both sides of the ball.

But Samuel believes a healthier San Francisco team will be far more dangerous than the 6-10 version from 2020.

“Me, [George] Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk, out of 1,100 plays, how many plays do you think we played together this past season?” he asked Sanders and Dukes. “One hundred and fifty-six. Me, Kittle, Aiyuk, and Jimmy [Garoppolo], how many plays you think we played out of 1,100? One hundred and twenty-six. Now, you do the math for that.”

How Brunskill handles the delayed Wagner blitzes, as well as defensive linemen Jarran Reed (6.5 sacks and 14 QB hits) and Poona Ford (eight TFLs and eight QB hits), would better determine whether he should remain at center, or if the 49ers need to go out and find a replacement.

Richie James, Wide Receiver, San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers are without Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. That leaves Kendrick Bourne as the top receiver.

Bourne is a free agent after the season. At $3.3 million, it’s up in the air whether he returns.

A nice performance against Seattle could either push him back into the 49ers’ plans, or price himself out.

Richie James would be the leading candidate to replace Bourne in the case he does not re-sign.

James entered 2020 as the return-specialist that occasionally ran routes.

Nearly all the SF 49ers’ cornerbacks are up for free agency, meaning they’ll at least need some bodies to fill out the 90-man roster into training camp.

Ken Webster stays.

OL Daniel Brunskill
Daniel Brunskill was a hidden-gem find out of the now-defunct Alliance of American Football in 2019. But 2020 proved to be a tough year for Brunskill, as he was asked to transition from right guard to center, which wasn’t a natural move.

Still, Brunskill has shown he can be a starting-caliber lineman and managed to start all 16 games last season. With plenty of other O-line questions this offseason, there’s no reason not to bring him back on his ERFA tag.

S Kai Nacua
SF 49ers fans probably had to look up this player when he made scant appearances late in the season.

The Kai Niners could lose unrestricted free-agent Jaquiski Tartt, and Marcell Harris is also an RFA in 2021.

For that reason alone, Nacua stays.

RB Austin Walter
San Francisco has a recent history of finding hidden-gem running backs, and the potential free-agent losses of Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon open up the door for Austin Walter to crack the back end of the roster as a forth-string rusher and return specialist.

The 53-man roster in 2021 is a long shot, but he should be a camp body at the very least.

SF 49ers Restricted Free Agents
QB Nick Mullens
Nick Mullens made a name for himself as a potential starting-caliber option back in 2018, but his opportunities in 2020 showed more regression than anything else.

His league-high 3.7 interception percentage will make it tough to apply even an original-round tender on worth more than $2 million, although the SF 49ers may need some continuity at quarterback depending what other transactions happen at the position this offseason.

In Week 9, when the 49ers were also without Aiyuk and Samuel, James burned Green Bay with nine catches on 13 targets, for 184 yards and a touchdown.

Since that career day, James has 11 catches on 17 targets for 144 yards. He’s also fumbled two punts.

With a full week of practice as part of the game plan, James has a chance to impress against a leaky Seattle secondary (4,318 passing yards allowed is most in NFL).

Austin Walter, Running Back, San Francisco 49ers

Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. powered the 49ers to victory last week with 183 yards on 22 carries.

Wilson has gone from depth to a legitimate piece in the 49ers’ offense. He’s impressed so much that he should enter next season with a promotion.

But given the commonality of injuries to running backs, San Francisco must find a replacement for Wilson’s important fourth-string position.

Undrafted rookie Austin Walter, who’s missed the last couple games on the Covid-list, was activated, and should play a role on Sunday.

It’s clear Tevin Coleman and Jerrick McKinnon are no longer the backs the 49ers signed. Injuries have stolen their speed.

Kyle Shanahan should use this as a tryout for Walter, and employ him as the 49ers’ change of pace for Wilson. He has just one rush for three yards and one catch for 27.

Additionally, given James and Trent Taylor’s struggles holding onto the football on special teams, Walter should return kicks. He leads the team with a 21.3 kick-return average on three attempts.
